All About Promise Rings
Promise or Pre-engagement rings are those rings, traditionally gifted by a would-be couple to each other as a token of future engagement in a life-long relationship. This Concept of Promise Rings runs age-old around the16th Century in England, in the Georgian and Victorian Eras as part of the Dethroning aspect of couples getting committed to each other. Earlier days did not have the concept of engagement but had a legally binding ceremony of dethroning to emphasize and bind the would-be couple with each other under love and commitment. Now, as the years have passed, the concept of promise rings has evolved to not to include not only a future commitment to marriage but also some other aspects and themes like a commitment and a promise to oneself, connection and affiliation with a religion or group, commitment to a goal, to stay pure till marriage, loyalty, fidelity, faithfulness, to give up smoking, remain in friendship, etc.
The social norm of Giving Promise Rings is that it is only lifted after the couple comes to know of each other for a significant amount of time, to signify the seriousness of the relationship and this gets replaced with an engagement ring in the future and is thus generally very modest in design and price.
Generally, a promise ring can be worn on any finger and sometimes it is also worn around a chain over the neck. But, usually, promise rings are worn on the ring finger on the left hand if the person is not married and on the right-hand right hand if the person is married.
Usually many promise rings have no center stone at all and in comparison to engagement rings are smaller in size and some good examples would include fingerprint engraved promise rings of couples, Signet rings of varying sizes, Three-Stone Promise Rings of trilogy themes, promise rings with heartbeats, a wedding band of 4mm with a monitor to measure heartbeats, and other ring offerings to include pet names, dates, phrases, names of would-be, intertwined hearts, Claddagh rings, eternity rings, metal bands made of mosaic or stones, or even sterling silver/palladium rings of 9 karat gold, etc.
The purity ring is also a type of promise ring, with other names like abstinence or chastity rings to signify and symbolize a religious vow to practice abstinence until marriage and a remarkable example of the same would be the celebrity singer Nick Jonas famously wearing and exhibiting his purity rings.
Also, another example of the modern day adoration for promise ring is Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus’s Fiancee Wearing a Promise Ring on his finger as a mark of loyalty and commitment to her.
