Why Are Round Diamonds The Most Expensive Cut

All nice diamonds shine, that is simply part of their natural beauty. However, even when it comes to the best, there are some diamonds which sparkle more than others, the foremost being the Round Cut Diamonds as its cut optimizes light return, maximizing the potential brightness of the stone.

According to statistics, about 75 percent of the diamonds sold are round cut diamonds. The reason for the popularity is to do with the brilliance that a round cut diamond has over other cut diamonds. The brilliance of a round diamond is largely due to the mechanics of its shape, one that allows maximum light to be reflected. Most round diamonds will have 58 facets (flat polished surface). The stone will have 57 facets if it does not have a culet (small facet at the bottom of the diamond) and act like little prisms, drawing in light and reflecting it into spectacular sparkles.

If we are to Compare A Round Cut Diamond with a diamond of any other cut, with both diamonds having same carat, color, and clarity, the cost of the round diamond will be about 25 to 35 percent more than the other cut diamond because of various reasons like labor work, demand and supply factors, etc.

Some of the Reasons As To Why Round Cut Diamonds Are The Most Expensive Cut:

ROUGH STONE CUTTING: The main reason Round Cut Diamonds Are The Most Expensive than other fancy shape diamonds is that in order to achieve the fire and brilliance of the round shape a large amount of the rough stone must be cut away increasing the number of facets and to bring about a wholesome round shape. This would, in turn, increase the cost per carat weight of diamonds to cost more.

LABOR SKILL: Round cut diamonds require a very high level of labor skill in the form of cleaving, sawing and bruting, one of the critical reasons as to why they are so expensive. To bring in forth a wholesome round-cut to shape in a diamond, much work and energy are required to sort and segregate the rough diamonds from the fine ones and then to finally polish them.

A LARGE AMOUNT OF RAW MATERIAL: Round cut diamonds require the most amount of raw material to be made in the sense that it takes a larger rough diamond to cut around diamond than other shapes. The cost for each carat retained from cutting a round diamond is relatively high. Other fancy cut diamonds, such as princess cut, useless wasted material when they are being professionally cut so are typically less money carat for carat.

ROUND SHAPE: The Round Shape is The Ideal Shape for the utmost level of sparkle, with its 58 facets that are placed strategically throughout the diamond, light is dispersed evenly throughout the entire stone and is reflected in the best way possible. This precision creates the proportions of a round stone are the perfect set-up for light to come into a diamond and reflect back to your eye in a way that makes the diamond look truly stunning. This plays a large role in why this shape is so popular and has been for decades.

DEMAND VS SUPPLY: Another very critical factor adding to the Price of A Round Cut Diamond is that they are constantly in demand but their yield and supply are invariably quite low, creating an ever heated price for them. This lower yield is primarily due to the round shape and the number of facets that a round diamond has. The amount of rough stone wasted to create a round diamond is more.

FIRM HOLD: Round Cut or Princess Cut Diamonds retain most of the original rough diamond’s weight, allowing the stones to sit fairly and firmly low in the frame seat, in comparison to other cut diamonds.
