What Is Gypsy Setting

When purchasing any piece of fine jewelry especially wedding or engagement rings, you will be presented with a long list of questions from what metal you would like, to what shape, size, and quality of diamonds you are after? What Stones, Settings or Engravings, price and maintenance factors, etc. Herein lies the art and skill of the jewelry artists in providing stress and drama free settings suitable for normal daily use.

We tend to take it for granted that all of the wonderful twinkling sparklers in our jewelry magically stay in firm position. In fact, it is made possible by expert stone setting done by a specialized group of jewelers practicing a lost art.

The thing about flush or gypsy setting is that it provides a firm holding for the stone or diamond diminishing the dramatic poetry of High Metallic Loose Ring/Stone Settings.

Typically, the Gypsy setting is used for accent diamonds or smaller stones finely set into wedding rings and such settings can be infused with the modern and contemporary wedding/engagement ring styles with numerous small stones or diamonds flushed in.

A flush or a Gypsy Setting in a Jewelry Piece is a jewelry setting in which the diamonds/stones are set into a drilled hole in the band of the ring to make the ring sit “flush” with the band of the ring.

Essentially, the jeweler in order to get this precise setting, hammers the metal around the diamond to hold it in place, meticulously crafted to perfectly flush the stones/diamonds in the firm hold of the metal. This engraving or setting process involves hammering of the heavy metal into a position wherein the cavity matches the Shape And Pitch of The Gem using a chasing tool or small pneumatic hammer to peen precious metal over the edge of the stones.

Generally, large stones are not fitted to the metal, rather few combinations of stones or diamonds are inserted to elude elegance.

This type of setting is a popular choice for wedding bands, especially Men’s Wedding Bands, as the diamond/stone sits securely in the band of the ring and is therefore highly protected from chipping or falling out.

Additionally, this type of setting is highly chosen by those who want to have a very low stated simple and elegant look as the amount of light that passes through the stone is very less.

There are many advantages of making use of this flush or gypsy setting namely:

  • Accommodates rough and tough usage as the stone is highly secured in the firm metallic structure;
  • Offers a sleek, polished, simple look
  • Ideal for people leading an active lifestyle and those with very busy hands
  • Very practical and functional to wear
  • Easy to maintain and clean

Some examples of rings with Flushed or Gypsy Settings are the ‘Gypsy – Pink and White’ wedding ring with alternating diamonds and pink sapphires, the ‘Union Gypsy’ gents two-tone yellow gold and white gold wedding ring featuring three 2pt princess cut diamonds, the ‘Gypsy Blue’ ladies wedding ring featuring eight blue diamonds, the ‘Dew Drop’ ladies wedding ring featuring eight 2 pt round brilliant diamonds, the Gypsy Secret ladies yellow gold wedding ring featuring twelve 1 pt round brilliant diamonds set discreetly into the sides of the band, etc.
