Limited Edition Oris Watches
Oris was founded in Switzerland in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian. They named the company after a brook nearby the town of Holstein, where they established their factory. After just two short years, Oris was able to open a second factory in the neighboring town of Holderbank.
The company’s growth continued over the next several years. By 1911, they had become the largest employer in the town of Holstein with over 300 workers. To expand further, they created a campus surrounding the factory that offered housing for their employees. Over the course of the next two decades, Oris would open four more factories in nearby cities.
1925 was an important year for Oris. Following WWI, the Limited Edition Oris Watches industry began to shift from pocket watches to wrist watches, and 1925 was the year that Oris introduced their first wrist watch into the market.
Throughout the 1930’s, Oris continued to grow and evolve. They opened their own dial factory in 1936 and began producing their own escapements in 1938. I?n 1938, Oris also introduced one of their most significant collections: the Big Crown. The Big Crown was the brand’s first pilot watch. As the name indicates, it’s distinguished by its oversized crown, designed to help pilots seamlessly adjust their watch while wearing leather flying gloves, as well as its unique Pointer Calendar function.
The 1940’s and the onset of WWI?I? caused shifts for Oris and the Limited Edition Watches industry as a whole. Still, Oris fared well during trying times, and in 1945, they received a award from the Bureau Officiel de Contrôle de la Marche des Montres in Le Locle for their pin-lever movement. The early 1950’s marked another significant milestone for Oris. I?n 1952, they debuted their first automatic movement, the Caliber 601.
The 1960’s were the golden years for Oris. They continued to be a strong presence in the industry, becoming one of the ten largest watch companies in the world, employing over 800 workers, and producing roughly 1.2 million Watches and clocks each year. They also began a apprenticeship program, training around 40 engineers and watchmakers per year. I?n turn, they continued to expand their offerings. I?n 1965, they released a state of the art Best Dive Watches boasting a unidirectional rotating bezel featuring a timer scale and water resistance up to 100 meters. Just three years later in 1968, they unveiled their first chronometer, the Caliber 652, which was awarded.
