How to Calculate Daimond Carat Weight

Calculation Of Diamond Carat Weight

The 4 Cs of Any Jewelry, including diamond jewelry is its cut, color, clarity and carat, each to offer and define its various attributes and properties in terms of the color hue, the way and manner its cut and given shape to, the presence of imperfections in the form of blemishes to obstruct the flow of light to enable the diamond to shine brilliantly and the carat weight.

Of all the four aspects, the carat aspect lays importance in its prime in terms of value and determining cost attribute and the term carat used in the jewelry industry is to mean a standard unit of measurement to Measure a Diamond’s Weight or density and generally, one-carat measurement is equal to 200 milligrams.

The word carat is derived from the word carob seed which was used in the mid-fifteenth century for measurement of jewelries which later on evolved into the International Carat in 1871 and a metric carat of 200 milligrams in 1907, both becoming part of the Weight and Measurement Metric System Act of England and set to eventual mass commercial usage of measurement.

We can find that fewer than one in one million mined rough stones are big enough to make a complete one-carat diamond, so as the carat weight increases, the more amount of money is to be churned to purchase the diamond on price per carat basis.

The greater the carat weight, the more would the diamond be worth and the more its value would be in terms of its price, especially for larger stone diamonds and thus it’s wise to learn to calculate the Carat Weight of a Diamond before purchasing any kind of diamond jewelry so as to not get defrauded by dubious jewelry men and this process is very simple and not cumbersome.

To calculate a diamond's weight by its carats, we just have to first weigh the stone in grams and then divide the number so received by .2 yields, weighing the stone as such by half a carat.

This carat weight is typically measured to the thousandth of a carat and then rounded off to the nearest hundredth and for this purpose, specialized measuring tools are used to get the most precise and accurate measurements.

Carat weight is often abbreviated as ct or CT or as CW or CW or even as diamond weight, DW or DW.

Further, for the purpose of Calculating Diamond Weights, there are different formulas available for different types of diamond cuts like round brilliant, oval princess cut or radiant cut.

The formula for round diamonds is by calculating diameter in mm with a diameter in mm with depth in mm with .006 and the formula for square and rectangular cuts like Asscher and princess cut is by multiplying its length with the width with the depth with its coefficient.

The aspect of carat weight is not to be mixed with the aspect of the size of a diamond. Depending upon the Type of Diamond Cut, two diamonds of the same carat weight can have different look and size. A 4-carat diamond with a high depth and small diameter may appear much smaller than another 4-carat diamond with low depth and a large diameter, the diamond shape being the establishing factor of influence.
