The Difference Between Princess Cut and Round Cut Diamond Rings

The Difference Between Princess Cut and Round Cut Diamond Rings

Investing in a bridal set is a decision that lasts a lifetime, something to stick to and decide in terms of sparkle and radiance, cost and uniqueness of style, etc. And the two most popular shapes are the Princess Cut and Round Cut Diamond Rings. The round cut is the most favorite for almost a century on account of its sheer brilliance but recently emerging is also the princess cut on account of cost and setting benefits.

ROUND CUT OR BRILLIANT CUT
Created in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky, a Brilliant is a Diamond or Other Gemstone Cut in a particular form with 58 facets to render an exceptional brilliance. The shape resembles that of a cone and provides maximized light return through the top of the diamond.

Round cut/brilliant diamonds are highly popular and extremely versatile and they can be a solitaire, in a two or three stone ring, or paired with other bands. Additionally, because of the multi-faceted cut and brilliant sparkle, minor flaws are easily hidden or camouflaged to give a neat luster appearance.

PRINCESS CUT
Relatively newly created by
Betazel Ambar and Israel Itzkowitz in 1980, they are the second most popular cut, from the Traditional Round Cut Diamond. The face-up shape of the princess cut is square or rectangular and the profile or side-on shape is similar to that of an inverted pyramid with four beveled sides.

Princess Cut Stones are generally considered more contemporary than the traditional round cut. Have the ability to accommodate to any style setting and engravings with a relatively lesser cost to incur.

Herein below are some points of difference between the round/brilliant and princess cut diamonds are:

COST

There exists at least a 25% Price Difference Between a Round Brilliant and Princess Cut Diamond as square princess diamonds are more affordable than round brilliant diamonds on account of it having a lower price-per-carat than their round cut counterparts. In the case of a 1 carat F SI1 round brilliant cut diamond, you would be able to buy a 1.3 carat F SI1 princess cut diamond.

APPEARACE AND SETTINGS

Princess cut stones offer better scope for engravings and settings with cost-benefit and are thus considered more contemporary than the traditional round cut. A princess cut diamond accommodates unique settings like a four-pronged, floral filigree cushion princess, channel setting or even a diamond wrap, etc. Comparatively, a brilliant/round cut accommodates lesser settings and styles for engravings.

SPARKLE AND RADIANCE

A princess cut diamond eludes lesser Radiance and Sparkle in Comparison to the round cut ones as it lends itself to more flaws and imperfections.

A round cut diamond offers higher sparkle and brilliance than a princess cut on account of its symmetrical shape and stone setup putting forth onto better dispersion of light maximizing the stone’s brightness and beauty. Additionally, round cut diamonds possess fewer flaws and more clarity and are also less likely to catch on clothing because the tone’s clean cuts leave no sharp edges to chip or break

SIZE
Size wise, a princess cut would offer a 10% bigger surface area than a round cut. The diagonal measurement of a 1-carat princess cut would measure approximately 7.7 mm, which is more than 1 mm wider than a 1 carat round brilliant cut diamond.
